Samsung has long been a leader in NVMe SSDs. Known for providing a high level of reliability and quality, Samsung’s all-flash solutions are built to deliver unrivaled performance and capacity, without bottlenecks. In addition, their SSDs are the most affordable.
Samsung’s line of consumer SSDs has recently been updated, including the new 970 EVO Plus. The drive is a PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD. It can accommodate up to 1TB of storage in the compact M.2 (2280) form factor. This drive features a 5-year limited warranty and a heat spreader. As a result, it will appeal to a wide range of users.
While it does have a relatively high price tag, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus is a solid PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD. The drive can handle all of the workloads you would expect, and it offers the endurance to go through up to 600 TBW of performance.
The 970 EVO Plus offers a 5-year limited warranty. There is also a nickel-coated controller for enhanced performance. Samsung’s Intelligent TurboWrite technology enables a larger maximum buffer region, allowing for faster sequential read and write speeds. Another feature is that the drive uses the latest V-NAND technology. Combined with its thin copper-film heat spreader, this ensures the drive will never overheat.
The Samsung 980 Pro, meanwhile, is designed for use with high-resolution games and video editing applications. It can achieve sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and 5,000 MB/s, respectively. It is also optimized for use with 3D graphics and video, as well as for use with high-definition gaming consoles.
One of the more notable changes from the 980 Pro to the new 990 Pro is the improved thermal management. This ensures that the drive stays cool, which helps prevent overheating and minimizes performance drops. Moreover, the drive’s “Dynamic Thermal Guard” automatically monitors optimal operating temperatures and ensures that the drive remains stable during use.
Another important change to the 990 Pro is that it isn’t an Evo-branded drive. Although it does share a number of features with the Evo line, it does not have the same capacity. Instead of the 2TB that is found in the 970 EVO, the 990 Pro will come in only 1TB. The cost of this drive will be $179 for the 1TB model, and $309 for the 2TB.
Other new features included in the 990 Pro include a hardware-based AES-XTS 256-bit encryption engine, as well as TCG Opal standard management. These features are intended to help data center architects manage storage capacity in an efficient manner. Also, the drive is equipped with a secure boot feature that will defend against advanced security threats.
Finally, the Samsung SSD PM1725b (HHHL) offers unprecedented performance and reliability. It’s built with a 3D vertical NAND flash memory and a customized controller. With its HHHL rating, it can achieve ultra-low latency, enabling up to 5 drive writes per day. At the same time, it can provide a staggering 1 terabyte of storage, or approximately a hundred times the capacity of a conventional SATA HDD.
